My Experience with Plantar Fasciitis

In all transparency, Plantar Fasciitis has plagued me for over four years, significantly hindering my ability to enjoy my outdoor life, especially hiking and trekking through the wilderness. It was so bad that I could hardly walk.

Over the years, I have consulted several doctors and physiotherapists, and explored various treatments and avenues desperately. Some of these treastments included Shockwave Therapy, Ultrasound Therapy, Physiotherapy, and also TCM (Tradtional Chinese Medicine including accupunture, cupping, and various herbal medications).

I have tested various shoe types, from those with heavy cushioning to designs featuring built-in arch support and other innovations aimed at alleviating Plantar Fasciitis.

After numerous trials and errors in selecting and testing footwear, and through many conversations with fellow sufferers, I have gained insight into the ideal shoes that can aid in Plantar Fasciitis relief and improvement.

Three Essential Features of Shoes For Plantar Fasciitis

There are 3 essential features of shoes that will massively help with your Plantar Fasciitis relief and other foot-related issues, including achilles Tendonitis.

  1. Wide Toe Box Shoes

A wide toe box refers to the front section of the shoe, where the toes are located. With a wide toe box shoe, our feet and toes can naturally spread and splay while walking and running.

With this, our foot can expand at the forefoot, distributing our body's weight effectively. This enhances better balance and stability and allows optimal foot function, ideal if you are suffering from Plantar Fasciitis.

  1. Zero Drop Shoes

"Drop" describes the height difference between a shoe's heel and forefoot.

A zero-drop shoe boasts a completely flat design, with no heel elevation, providing a level surface from heel to toe.

Elevating the heel in footwear can exert excessive stress on the forefoot, causing a chronic shortening of the heel cord, calf muscles, and Achilles tendon. This elevation angles the foot downward, increasing tension and pressure on the forefoot.

Such stress may lead to the persistent shortening of the Achilles tendon and calf muscles, potentially resulting in conditions like ankle instability, plantar fasciitis, and hammer toes.

By keeping the heel level, these shoes distribute weight evenly across the foot, leading to better balance, less pain, and improved athletic

Note: Zero Drop Shoes are not barefoot shoes. Zero Drop Shoes can have plenty of cushioning.

  1. Stack Height Shoes

Stack height refers to the amount of material in a shoe that sits between your foot and the ground. This measurement is often linked to the amount of cushioning a shoe offers.

Most shoes typically feature a slightly higher stack height at the heel compared to the forefoot, such as a 33mm/28mm configuration, to provide enhanced cushioning.

Excessive cushioning underfoot reduces sensory feedback, potentially causing atypical reactions. This can impair the foot’s response, increasing the risk of injury as essential muscles may not engage effectively to absorb shock.

In conclusion, shoes with lower stack heights generally deliver a firmer, more responsive feel underfoot, while those with higher stack heights offer a softer, more cushioned experience.

If you are suffering from Plantar Fasciitis, a higher stack height can offer increased comfort. Initially, aim to keep it below 29mm. As your Achilles tendon and Plantar Fasciitis condition improves, gradually reduce it to below 15mm or even lower. This adjustment provides your foot with a firmer, more responsive feel underfoot.
